Apply Tech and Media

The artifacts for this competency are documents that I have created for my workplace using the knowledge and skills that I have learned in the LD&T program.

Plans and designs effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology

Artifact: Laptop Cart Training and Procedures

Because of my expertise with using technology in the classroom, I was asked to design procedures for teachers and students in using the school’s new laptop carts. The school has faced problems in the past because procedures either did not exist or were too cumbersome to be practical. As a result, the machines were not operational for their entire intended lifespan.

The artifact is a living document housed on the school’s shared drive.  The attached document was downloaded February 8th, 2014. The first two pages are the formalized procedures, the third page shows objectives and notes for the laptop program, and the remainder of the document is a chance for less-structured conversation around best practices.

A solid set of technology procedures is just the beginning of our plan and design for a learning environment that is supported by technology. As we continue through the year, we will collaborate around best practices and pedagogy.

Applies technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies

Artifacts: Procedures for using online resourcesSurvey Data Presentation

I have chosen two artifacts that show different types of evaluation. The “writing collaboration” section of the procedures document shows how I use collaborative documents to assess my students’ writing progress. By expanding the use of formative assessments, increasing student buy-in, and improving my workflow, I was able to guide my students to better finished products.

The second document shows a survey that I administered, analyzed, and presented using digital tools.  After revising a school-wide survey with a colleague, I created a Google form so that the results could be tabulated easily. After downloading the results as an Excel spreadsheet and creating appropriate charts, I summarized the results in a PowerPoint Slideshow and emailed it to my team. My colleagues were pleased with the clarity of the survey results, which gave us the information we needed to make decisions and refocus our efforts.

Demonstrates understanding of social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology and applies it in practice

Artifact: Syllabus with introduction to classroom technology

This document for students and parents explains how technology is used in the classroom and establishes permission for students to use online tools. It shows a snapshot of the ways I apply technology in the classroom and demonstrates my understanding of the issues of using technology.  The new Common Core exams are computer-based, but because my students are under 13, I have had to work closely with their parents to teach the children how to use technology without compromising their safety.
